All about FUN!

Let's look at Hershey this week :)

If you get the chance you could go to Hershey World - which isn't the same as the amusement park - But there is more to the town and its heritage. Check out the Hershey Gardens!

There's an Antique Auto Museum for the guys - or if you are in to that...And there are lots of restaurants available. My favorite is the Hershey Pantry. Give it a try if you get the chance.

Though childless, the Hersheys loved children. In 1909 he and his wife established and financed the Milton Hershey School, an educational institution for orphaned boys. In 1918 he placed most of his fortune in trust for the school. Today, the Milton Hershey School enrolls 1100 boys and girls who meet admission criteria. In 1970 Founders Hall was dedicated as a tribute to Milton S. Hershey and his wife Catherine. The Founders Hall Rotunda is the second largest in the world. Visitors can tour areas of this beautiful building and its grounds weekdays all year. Admission is free.

Here's something I got in my emails that I thought you might like to know about...
Lititz Named Coolest Small Town in America!
Lititz PA
We're proud of all of our quaint small towns and villages here in Lancaster County, but now one of them can lay official claim to being the "coolest" in the whole United States. Lititz, home to the Wilbur Chocolate Factory and the oldest commercial pretzel bakery in the United States, recently won an online poll at BudgetTravel.com as the Coolest Small Town in the country! See why everyone agrees Lititz is so great!
And here is one I thought was interesting...

Let me know when you get finished and I'll enter you in the drawing :)

There is so much to do in this part of Pennsylvania, I hope you'll take some time visit some of these sites. Here is a map of historic places that are in or really close to Harrisburg:

The State Museum of Pennsylvania

Adjacent to Pennsylvania’s State Capitol building in Harrisburg, The State Museum offers exhibits and exquisite collections interpreting the state’s fascinating heritage. From the dawn of geologic time, to the Native American experience, colonial and revolutionary beginnings, and a pivotal Civil War battleground through the Commonwealth’s vast industrial age,The State Museum demonstrates that Pennsylvania’s story is America’s story.

Gettysburg, PA

The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War, the Union victory that ended General Robert E. Lee's second and most ambitious invasion of the North. Often referred to as the "High Water Mark of the Rebellion", Gettysburg was the war's bloodiest battle with 51,000 casualties. It was also the inspiration for President Abraham Lincoln's immortal "Gettysburg Address".

The National Civil War Museum

As President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address encompassed the emotions of the American struggle, The National Civil War Museum portrays this struggle as a time line, from the issues straining the nation through the war's conclusion at Appomattox Court House. Nowhere can you find a better understanding of the Civil War, its effect on the nation, or on the people. Come walk our halls. See and feel the emotions rise and fall as you embrace Bull Run, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Antietam, and Gettysburg; once ordinary places transformed to hallowed ground within a few hours.

Daniel Boone Homestead

Join us for a relaxed evening on the lawn. Bring a picnic dinner and listen to music, tour the Boone house & Bertolet cabin, and play eighteenth century games. There will also be various eighteenth century demonstrations throughout the evening, including blacksmithing and spinning.

Ephrata Cloister

One of America's earliest religious communities, the Ephrata Cloister was founded in 1732 by German settlers seeking spiritual goals rather than earthly rewards. Gathered in unique European style buildings, the community consisted of celibate Brothers and Sisters, and a married congregation of families.

At the zenith of the community in the 1740s and 1750s, about 300 members worked and worshiped at the Cloister. Today, the National Historic Landmark is open for tours, special programs, and on-going research opportunities.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is the largest museum of early Pennsylvania German life in the country.

 Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania

Explore more than 100 historic locomotives and vintage railroad cars at Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

Cornwall Iron Furnace

Cornwall Iron Furnace is America's most complete charcoal-fueled iron-making complex.

I know many of you are planning to come early or stay longer so you can see some of the sights around Amish Country and do some shopping before going home so I'm offering this site to you as a fantastic way to plan an itinerary. I've made one for our Saturday outing and if you want to see it you just have to follow the instructions...Go to the site and you will see "New Trip" & "Saved Trips"; click on "Saved Trips" at the top of the page.  This will take you to where you will need to log in. The user name is COF2013PA  and the password is COF2013 - clever, huh? The next page will show you what is in store for Saturday! No, no one will probably make it to all these stops but hopefully you'll get to the ones on your list. Which ones will be up to you so I'd take a look-see to decide which may be places you just don't want to miss. Once you have done this you will be able to answer the Sunday Sur-Prize question :) Have fun! Don't forget to sign out when you are finished.

Here are some links to some things you might want to do or see while you are in the area.
